From Proto-Indo-European *torh₁-ós, from *terh₁- (“to rub, turn; to drill, pierce”).[1] Compare τετραίνω (tetraínō, “to bore”), Latin terō (“I rub”) and Old Armenian թուր (tʻur, “sword”).
