φάψ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
The formation is similar to other bird names, such as γύψ (gúps, “vulture”) and σκώψ (skṓps, “owl”). The word is clearly related to φάσσα (phássa, “pigeon”) and thus Pre-Greek.
