Contraction of φαεινός (phaeinós), from Proto-Hellenic *pʰawehnós, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂wesnós, adjective noun from substantive *bʰéh₂wos (whence φάος (pháos)), from *bʰeh₂- (to shine).[1]
