Borrowed from Venetan fodra, itself a loan tracing back to Proto-Germanic *fōdrą (“sheath”), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (“to protect, guard”). Doublet of φούτερ (foúter), borrowed directly from Germanic, which has come to mean “sweatshirt”.
