Borrowed from Venetan fodra, itself a loan tracing back to Proto-Germanic *fōdrą (sheath), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect, guard). Doublet of φούτερ (foúter), borrowed directly from Germanic, which has come to mean “sweatshirt”.
