Etymology
From Koine Greek ὂ μικρόν (ò mikrón, “small O”), in contrast to ὦ μέγα (ô méga, “big O, omega”). It took its name from the round shape of the Phoenician letter 𐤏 ayin, not from its name (like other letters: e.g. άλφα (álfa) / ἄλφα (álpha) from aleph, βήτα (víta) / βῆτα (bêta) from beth, etc.)
