Bulgarian

Etymology

Disputed:

  • According to Mladenov, from an earlier *do že (whence Old Church Slavonic дожи (doži)) with an uncharacteristic for Bulgarian rhotacism (as in Slovene kȁr (which, so) < *ka že, tọ́re (therefore) < *to že, Serbo-Croatian jȅr (because of) < *je že). Accepted with reservation by Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary.
  • Alternatively, perhaps a petrified case of an unattested noun *dorь.

Pronunciation
