Etymology

Borrowed from Romanian zestre (dowry), from Latin dextrae pl (pledging). According to Stefan Mladenov, the Bulgarian and Romanian terms may alternatively stem from Proto-Slavic *zęt- (kinship) +‎ *-tra.
