кобель

Related to Polish przekobiały. Originally referred to animal skin that has cross (пер-ко-) white (белый) lines. An archaic phrase: "Чёрного кобеля не отмоешь добела" meant that black dog (or another animal) with cross-white lines on its skin can't be washed to whiteness. Related to adjective Russian перкобелый (perkobelyj). Formant perko- "cross" works analogically with any other color.[1]
