Etymology

Biological term borrowed from English retrovirus, coined in the 1980's. Equivalent to ретро- (retro-, former, backwards) +‎ вирус (virus).

The name refers to the reverse pattern of replication of the virus - by first transcribing intrusive DNA from the virale own RNA, which is then attached to the DNA sequence of the host cell.
