Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sьrxъ. Cognate with Slovene srh (“shiver”) and the Bulgarian verb настръхна (nastrǎhna, “bristle up (hair)”). Further related to Middle High German hurst (“shrubbery”), whence German Horst (“thicket, small forest”).
