From Volga Turki تموغ (tamuğ, hell), via Chagatai [Term?], from Old Uyghur [script needed] (tamuğ, hell),[1] from an Iranian language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *temH- (dark).

Cognate with Tatar тәмуг (tämuğ, hell), Uzbek tamugʻ (hell), Uyghur تامۇق (tamuq, hell), Turkish tamu (hell).
