Borrowed from Russian уро́д (uród). Synchronically, a doublet of ю́род (júrod) (inherited term).

The Russian borrowing dominates in the standard language, while the inherited term – in literary and poetic environment.

Inherited from Old East Slavic уродъ (urodŭ, feebleminded, witless, foolish), from Proto-Slavic *ǫrodъ, ancient deverbative of *roditi with nominal negative prefix *ǫ-, zero grade of *ne, from Proto-Indo-European *n̥-.
