Unclear. Compare Proto-Slavic *pyrь (cinder, incense; lye), reflected in dialectal пирива́ (pirivá, poor-quality soil), or loanword фира́ (firá, lees, sludge, residue) (borrowed from Greek φύρα (fýra, waste)).
