Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *türi- (“lineage, ancestry”), likely via Ottoman Turkish ترك (türk). Compare Russian and Ukrainian тюрк (tjurk). Doublet of турак (turak), possibly an inherited form from Proto-Slavic.
