From Proto-Turkic *ăča / *ĕče (“mother; elder sister; older woman”). The final -y is originally a vocative affix. Also see әсә (əsə, “mother”).

Compare to Kyrgyz ачай (acay, “the way a child addresses his/her mother when raised by his/her grandmother”).
