Perhaps related to דִּין (dín, “law”) or from Proto-Semitic *ʾadan- (“to rule, judge”). Compare Ugaritic 𐎀𐎄𐎚 (ảdt, “lady”), Phoenician 𐤀𐤃𐤍 (ʾdn, “lord”), Ancient Greek Ἄδωνις (Ádōnis, “mortal lover of the goddess Aphrodite”).
