Etymology
Compound of בֶּן (ben, “son of”) + בַּיִת (báyit, “house”). In Hebrew, the expression "son of" may be used to express a person's origin, e.g. בְּנֵי בָבֶל (literally “sons of Babylon”), meaning people of Babylon (Ezekiel 23:15).
