From Ancient Greek ἱπποπόταμος (hippopótamos), from ἵππος (híppos, “horse”, from Proto-Hellenic *íkkʷos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos) + ποταμός (potamós, “river”, of uncertain origin).
