Verb

הִפִּיל • (hipíl) (hif'il construction, passive counterpart הופל / הֻפַּל)

  1. to drop (something)
  2. to throw (something), to throw (something) down
  3. to thwart, impede, obstruct
  4. to destroy, bring down
  5. to defeat
  6. to shoot down (such as an idea or suggestion)
  7. to miscarry, abort
  8. to knock over, make fall, bring down
  9. (colloquial) to impose upon someone

Usage notes

  • When someone has accidentally dropped something by losing his or her grip on it, it is more common to use נָפַל לְ־ (nafál l'-, to fall to) rather than הִפִּיל (hipíl). In that case, the subject denotes the dropped item, and is usually postponed:
נפל לי העיפרון.nafál lí ha'iparón.I dropped the pencil (literally, “Fell to-me the-pencil.”)
