הִפִּיל • (hipíl) (hif'il construction, passive counterpart הופל / הֻפַּל)

8. to knock over, make fall, bring down
9. (colloquial) to impose upon someone

• When someone has accidentally dropped something by losing his or her grip on it, it is more common to use נָפַל לְ־ (nafál l'-, “to fall to”) rather than הִפִּיל (hipíl). In that case, the subject denotes the dropped item, and is usually postponed:

  נפל לי העיפרון. ― nafál lí ha'iparón. ― I dropped the pencil (literally, “Fell to-me the-pencil.”)
