From Proto-Semitic *layʾ-at- ~ laʾay-at- (cow), possibly from verbal root *l-ʾ-y (to be strong, mighty). Cognate with Akkadian 𒀖 (lītum, cow) and Arabic لَآة (laʔāh, wild cow).
