Calque of Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid): formed in modern times by applying the pattern מִקְטָל (“place”) to סָגַד (sagád, “to bow down, prostrate”), which is cognate with Arabic سَجَدَ (sajada).

  Praise be to Allah, Who carried His servant (Muhammad) by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Kaaba) to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (the Nearest Mosque), whose surroundings We have blessed, that We might show him some of Our signs. And He is indeed All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
