From reduplication of סיג (sig, dross, base metal),[1] in turn derived from סוג (sug, kind, class),[2] with original verbal meaning of "to turn away, reject" as well as "to hem in, bind, fence in".[3][4] Compare סגסג (sigség, to alloy), סייג (siyég, to enclose, fence in).
