Etymology 2
The meaning was given to the word for its similar sound to German Ziffer meaning digit, and for its connection to the root ס־פ־ר (s-p-r, “Forming words relating to counting”). The German word itself comes from Arabic صِفْرٌ (ṣifrun, “zero”).[1]
