From Akkadian 𒆗𒉌𒉡 (danninu, “netherworld; source of earthquakes; the inaccessible land where the dead remain”), whence also Aramaic תַּנִּינָא / ܬܱܢܺܝܢܳܐ (tannīnā, “sea serpent, monster”) and Ugaritic 𐎚𐎐𐎐 (tnn).
