Ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *aral (“island”). Compare other Turkic cognates like Kazakh арал (aral), Kyrgyz арал (aral), Uyghur ئارال (aral), Uzbek orol and Yakut арыы (arıı), all deriving from the same root.
