Ultimately from Venetan venèdego (“Venetian”), formally reshaped by folk etymology بُنْدُق (bunduq, “hazelnut”) + ـِيَّة (-iyya). Possibly mediated by Ottoman Turkish وندیك (venedik) from German Venedig.
