Etymology
From Middle Persian pndk' (pondik, “hazelnut”), from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον (Pontikón káruon, “Pontic nut”). From hazelnuts, the sense spread to similarly shaped pebbles used in slings and similar projectile weapons and then to early muskets. In some dialects, the word then came to be used for the slingshots and muskets themselves.
