From Andalusian Arabic البُنْدُقَة (al-bunduqa, “the hazelnut”), from Arabic بُنْدُق (bunduq, “hazelnut, pebble, bullet”), from Middle Persian pndk' (pondik, “hazelnut”), from Ancient Greek Ποντικόν κάρυον (Pontikón káruon, “Pontic nut”). Compare Ladino albondiga and Portuguese almôndega.
