Etymology

From Arabic إِي (ʔī), or أَيْ (ʔay, yes), + وَـ (wa-). The former two only occur before swearing or oaths, e.g. إِي وَرَبِّي (ʔī wa-rabbī), إِي وَٱللهِ (ʔī wal-lāhi, yes, by God), and thus were often followed by وَـ (wa-, by).
