From Middle Persian twlkʾ (/⁠tōlag⁠/, baby animal, whelp), from Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬥𐬀 (tauruna, young). Cognate with Sanskrit तरुण (taruṇa, juvenile). Cf. تور (tōr / tur, uncivilized).
