From Middle Persian twlkʾ (/tōlag/, “baby animal, whelp”), from Avestan 𐬙𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬥𐬀 (tauruna, “young”). Cognate with Sanskrit तरुण (taruṇa, “juvenile”). Cf. تور (tōr / tur, “uncivilized”).
