Etymology

From Classical Syriac, attested as ܚܙܳܩܳܐ (ḥəzāqā, belt; tie, bond, vinculum) from the root ܚ ܙ ܩ “to gird; to constrict, to hold or contain tightly; to tighten”. Compare عَزَقة (ʕazaqa, ring) corresponding to حَزْقَة (ḥazqa, constraint in the venter).
