Either from an -ōn diminutive of חַלְתָא / ܚܠܬܐ (ḥalləṯā, definite state), Aramaic חַלָּה / ܚܠܐ (ḥallā, absolute state), from Hebrew חַלָּה (ḥallá, loaf; challah), or a Mozarabic reborrowing with Romance -ón ending.
