Etymology 1
From Middle Persian lʾc (rāz, “secret, mystery”), from Old Persian *rāzah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *raȷ́ʰ- (“secret, mystery; to abandon”). Related to رستن (rastan, “set free, leave, escape”), and رها (rahâ, “free, liberated”).
Cognates with Parthian 𐫡𐫀𐫉 (rʾz /rāz/), and Sanskrit रहस्य (rahasya, “secret, mystery, clandestine”).
Also compare Old Armenian երազ (eraz), Imperial Aramaic 𐡀𐡓𐡆𐡀 (ʾrzʾ, “mystery”), Hebrew רָז (rāz), Classical Syriac ܐܪܙܐ (ʾərāzā), Iranian borrowings.
