From Aramaic רִיטְלָא / ܪܺܝܛܠܳܐ (rīṭlā), earlier לִיטְרָא / ܠܺܝܛܪܳܐ (līṭrā), from Ancient Greek λίτρα (lítra). Doublet of لِتْر (litr), a later French loanword.
