From Middle Persian stwtn' (/stūdan/), stʾdytn' (/stāyīdan/, “to praise”), from Proto-Iranian *stā́wti (“to praise”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stā́wti (“to praise, laud”). Cognate with Sanskrit स्तौति (stauti, “to praise, extol”), Punjabi ਉਸਤਤਿ (usatti), Ancient Greek στεῦται (steûtai, “to promise or threaten that one will”), Hittite [script needed] (istuwa-, “to become public”).
