Etymology

From Middle Persian stwtn' (/⁠stūdan⁠/), stʾdytn' (/⁠stāyīdan⁠/, to praise), from Proto-Iranian *stā́wti (to praise), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stā́wti (to praise, laud). Cognate with Sanskrit स्तौति (stauti, to praise, extol), Punjabi ਉਸਤਤਿ (usatti), Ancient Greek στεῦται (steûtai, to promise or threaten that one will), Hittite [script needed] (istuwa-, to become public).
