Ultimately from a Proto-Oghuz term attested as Old Anatolian Turkish سلجك (selcuk) in the Dede Korkut and Karakhanid سلجك (selcuk) in Mahmud al-Kashgari's Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, of uncertain etymology. See Seljuk.
