From Middle Persian swknd (sōgand, “oath”),[1] from Avestan [Term?] (/saokanta/, “sulphur”),[2] from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewk- (“white”). Related to سوختن (sōxtan, “to burn”), and سوگ (sōg, “sadness, mourning”).
