شبه الجزيرة العربية
Arabic
Etymology
Composed of شِبْه (šibh, “quasi-”) + جَزِيرَة (jazīra, “island”) + عَرَبِيَّة (ʕarabiyya, “Arab, Arabian”). شِبْه جَزِيرَة (šibh jazīra) by itself means "peninsula"; note, however, that عَرَبِيَّة (ʕarabiyya, “Arabian”) modifies جَزِيرَة (jazīra) rather than شِبْه (šibh).
Proper noun
شِبْه ٱلْجَزِيرَة ٱلْعَرَبِيَّة • (šibh al-jazīra l-ʿarabiyya) f
- Arabian Peninsula (a peninsula of Western Asia between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf; includes Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates)
Declension
In fully declined Classical Arabic, شِبْهُ الجَزِيرَةِ العَرَبِيَّةِ (šibhu l-jazīrati l-ʕarabiyyati). شِبْه (šibh, “quasi-”) is in the construct state, and both following terms are in the genitive case, with عَرَبِيَّة (ʕarabiyya, “Arabian”) an adjectival modifier of جَزِيرَة (jazīra, “island”), as described above.
