Etymology

Borrowed from Aramaic שְׁיׇיפָא / ܫܝܵܦܼܵܐ (šəyāp̄ā, salve), from the root שׁ־ו־ף / ܫ ܘ ܦ related to rubbing, cognate to the Arabic root ش و ف (š w f). Akin to Old Armenian շուփայ (šupʻay) and Persian شافه (šāfa), Semitic borrowings.
