Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Turkic *koguĺ (“tree hollow”); cognate with Azerbaijani koğuş, Bashkir ҡыуыш (qıwış), Chuvash хӑвӑл (hăvăl), Kazakh қуыс (quys), Kumyk къувуш (quwuş), Kyrgyz кууш (kuuş) and Yakut куоһаах (kuohaaq).
