Etymology 1

According to Nishanyan, a derivation from the Proto-Turkic verb *kova- (“to empty the inside, to hollow”), itself a development of *kovï (“hollow”). Related to قوف (kof, “hollow, rotten”), قوغوش (koğuş, “ward, dormitory”) and قوغوق (koğuk, “hollow”).
