كلاپیر

Ottoman Turkish

Alternative forms

  • كلپير

Etymology

Unknown. Compare Northern Kurdish kelep’ûr (inheritance; anything acquired at no cost (e.g., as inheritance); anything acquired dishonestly at no cost), Central Kurdish کەڵەپوور (kełepûr, things left for relatives after the death of a relation; cheap, free (of charge)). The /kele/ may point to a Kurdish origin, which is a prefix giving sense of maleness, (compare کەڵەشێر (kelleşêr, rooster), کەڵەگا (kellega, stud; bully), kelejin (manly woman)...), the /por//pûr/ may be in the sense of son (as it is in pispor, from Proto-Iranian *puθráh) giving the sense of inheritance left to a son.
