      Borrowed from Classical Persian مَعْذِرَت (ma'zirat), borrowed from Arabic مَعْذِرَة (maʕḏira), from عَذَر (ʕaḏar).[1][2][3] First attested in c. 1609 as Middle Hindi معذرت (m'ẕrt /⁠ma'ẕirat⁠/).[4]
