Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of مهدی (“the Mahdi”) + Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (“slave”)), literally “slave of the Mahdi”; compare Azerbaijani Məhdiqulu, Chagatai مهدیقلی, Turkish Mehdikulu.
