Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit पटोल (paṭola), ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *puḍala. Doublet of پَٹول (paṭol), a tatsama. Cognate with Marathi पडवळ (paḍvaḷ).
