Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi پیسا (pysa) (c. 1528),[1] from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀬𑀁𑀲 (*payaṃsa), from Sanskrit *पदांश (*padāṃśa, quarter part), from पद (pada, quarter) +‎ अंश (aṃśa, part, piece),[2] in reference to the coin being worth a quarter of an anna.
