Etymology
From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wls /wars/, “hair”), from Proto-Iranian *wálśah, cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa, “hair (on the head)”), Sogdian 𐼴𐽀𐼼 (wrs /wars/, “hair”) and Northern Kurdish pirç (pirč, “hair on the head”); from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wálćas, cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, “twig, sprout”); from Proto-Indo-European *wólḱ-o-s, cognate with Proto-Slavic *volsъ (“hair”). Akin to Old Armenian վարս (vars, “hair”) and վարշամակ (varšamak, “handkerchief; headband”), which are Iranian borrowings.
