Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gwšnk' /gušnag/, “hungry”), from Proto-Iranian *warš- (“to be hungry”), an Iranian-specific coinage modeled after Proto-Iranian *tarš- (“to be thirsty”), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *ters- (“dry, thirsty”).[1]
