ܒܪܬܐ
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
Etymology
From the older form *ܒܪܲܬܵܐ (*brattā), variant of Aramaic בַּרְתָּא (barṯā), from Proto-Semitic *bint-. Possibly a back-formation from old possessive forms such as Classical Syriac ܒܪܲܬ݂ܝ (braṯ, “my daughter”); compare Mlahsö ܒܪܰܬܐ (brato), Turoyo ܒܰܪܬ݂ܐ (barṯo), Arabic بِنْت (bint), Hebrew בַּת (bat) and Akkadian 𒁉𒅔𒌈 (bintum). The latter noun is derived from the former through baby talk or mimicking of it.
Pronunciation
- ܒܪܵܬܵܐ:
- ܒܵܪ݇ܬܵܐ:
- IPA(key): [baːtaː]
Noun
ܒܪܵܬܵܐ • (brātā) f (plural ܒ̈ܢܵܬ݂ܵܐ (bnāṯā), masculine ܐܸܒܪܵܐ (ibrā))
Usage notes
- (daughter): This is only used for genetic and adopted daughters, not stepdaughters. A stepdaughter is instead referred to as ܒܪܵܬ ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (brāt gaḇrā, literally “the daughter of a husband”) or ܒܪܵܬ ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (brāt baḵtā, literally “the daughter of a wife”).
