From ܡܣܟܝܢܐ (meskênā, poor), from Akkadian 𒈦𒂗𒆕 (muškēnu [MAŠ.EN.KAK]) + the abstract noun ending -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯā). Compare Akkadian 𒈦𒂗𒆕𒌓 (/⁠muškēnūtu⁠/, state of being dependent on others, poverty), Arabic مَسْكَنَة (maskana) and Hebrew מִסְכֵּנוּת (miskēnûṯ).
